Abstract
Participant modeling was used to introduce students to this behavioral technique for reducing anxiety and avoidance behavior. An expert model and peer models performed appropriate approach responses when interacting with a red rat snake, Elaphe quttata. Using guided participation, students who had previously indicated they were afraid of snakes were encouraged to approach, touch, and hold the snake. Students' evaluations of this activity were highly favorable. Participant modeling provides an excellent introduction to behavior therapies and encourages students to think critically. This activity illustrates some of the difficulties encountered when evaluating the effectiveness of therapeutic techniques.
