Abstract
In order to help students appreciate the impact of gender on social relationships and social structure, it is useful to have them consider different conceptions of gender. One way to do this is by exposing them to science fiction about worlds in which gender is constructed very differently. This article describes the classroom use of two science fiction novels to illustrate the links between a society's assumptions about gender and its practices with respect to such matters as family structure, interpersonal relationships, and language.
