An exercise in asking questions as preparation for writing essays was developed to encourage students to analyze and evaluate personality theories. Students wrote questions that were then discussed and classified according to Bloom's taxonomy. Twice in the term students chose questions to develop into essays. Rough drafts of the essays were discussed in small groups. The proportion of evaluative questions that students wrote increased during the course of the term. A questionnaire administered at the end of the term indicated that 90% of the students viewed the exercise positively. Having copies of others' questions and discussing rough drafts were rated as particularly useful.
