Abstract
As of September, 1991, according to estimates furnished by the Banco Internacional de Desarrollo, the overall cost of the infrastructure damage and loss of export revenue occasioned by the earthquake was approximately $500 million. Over 7,000 houses were destroyed or damaged severely enough to require demolition. Approximately 30,000 people were left homeless. Forty-five public buildings were damaged.
