Abstract
Examination of the shoulder joint should be relatively straightforward, given that it is a very superficial joint. Examination starts with a detailed history, including activities of daily living, and progresses in a logical manner through Apley’s ‘look, feel, move’. ‘Move’ is further split into active, passive and special tests. These are designed to look at various specific aspects of shoulder pathology. Not every test needs to be done in every patient. You should then have a clear idea of the underlying pathology before embarking on radiological examination.
