Abstract
The effects of preboiling were investigated on the drying, hygroscopic and dimensional properties of Scottish grown Sitka spruce (Pinus sitchensis) wood. There were minor improvements in the drying and dimensional changes with the only significant changes being the hygroscopic behaviour of wood dried under high temperature. The limitations in the changes observed in the wood properties are possible indications of insignificant changes in the chemical and anatomical properties of this species after preboiling.
There is therefore the need for further investigations on the effects of different level preboiling on the extractive contents and the anatomical properties, which can be related to the little changes observed in this study.
