Abstract
Coatings of the alloy Co–17Cr–12·5Al–0·45Y were vacuum plasma sprayed on to steel substrates. A CO2 high power continuous wave laser with a Gaussian rectangular beam was applied to treat the coatings after spraying. The treatment was carried out using 7·5 kW cm−2 power density and a relative beam scan speed in the range O.7–1.3 m min−1 and resulted in themelting of the coatings. The microstructure of the treated alloy and the heat affected zone was analysed using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Finally, the wear resistance of the coatings was tested using sliding wear, oscillating wear, and scratch tests.
