Abstract
This paper reports a new surface modification technique that couples high power CO2 laser processing with low pressure plasma spray coating. In order to clarify the effect of laser irradiation on tribological properties, everal metal and ceramic films have been synthesised using a laser and plasma hybrid spraying (LP HS) system. Tribological characterisation of the films was achieved by a sliding test with oil lubrication. The results show that it is possible to produce a highperformance tribomaterial possessing good adhesion and little microporosity with the LP HS system. Analysis of X RD results suggests that a metastable state is formed by laser irradiation during the spraying process, which is closely related to the antiwear and low friction mechanisms of LP HS produced films.
