Surface modification of polymers has been investigated using low temperature plasma techniques such as plasma grafting and plasma immersion ion implantation. The polymers studied include polyethylene terephthalate tyre cord, silk fabrics, and polyimide films and the changes in molecular structure of the polymer surface were analysed with the aid of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy.
