Cadmium has been under considerable pressure in recent years on the grounds of its toxicity and consequent environmental unacceptability. The applications of cadmium, especially as an electrodeposited coating, are reviewed and the possibility of alternatives to cyanide as a process anion and cadmium as a deposit considered. It is emphasised that, with the choice of good effluent treatment methods, total withdrawal of cadmium should not be a rational option.
