Abstract
The major source of shutdown radiation in PWR plant is the 60Co radio nuclide generated from Stellite alloys used for wear resistance in the circuit. Initial attempts to replace cobalt based alloys with materials based on the nickel-chromium-boron system were unsuccessful in prototype testing. A galling test applied to these alloys and a new range of iron based materials has revealed considerable differences in performance. Two iron based alloys, Delcrome 910 and Deloro EB 5183, have now been selected for testing in valves.
