The advantages of surface engineering finish rolls used to produce automobile panels are described. By laser texturing the skin pass roll it is possible to obtain a more uniform surface finish on the steel strip and so a better final painted finish. The effect of surface finish on formability (drawability and antigalling behaviour) was also investigated. Practical aspects are discussed and the prospect of tailoring surface finish to produce sheet with optimised properties for specific applications is put forward.
