Abstract
Improved and reliable ceramic materials are key elements for the development of many advanced energy systems, such as gas turbines and diesel engines. Laser melting of plasma sprayed ceramic coatings represents an important step in that direction. It can seal the pores that are present in the sprayed coatings and thus increase the life of coated components by eliminating the access of corrosive gases and molten salts to the underlying metallic substrate. One of the problems is the cracking of the melted layer during cooling. The objective of the present investigation is to develop an understanding of the effect of various processing parameters on· laser melting of various ceramic coatings based on ZrO2 Al2O3, and TiO2. It is shown that it is possible to produce crack free melted layers in the Al2O3 and TiO2 systems. Directions for future research to achieve this in ZrO2 systems are indicated.
