Abstract
An investigation has been made of some metallurgical features of an austenitic stainless steel (Type 316L) in the fonn of a laser deposited clad layer on a mild steel substrate. The substrate surface was clad by a series of partially overlapping tracks. The cladding material in the forn1 of a fine powder was injected into the laser generated melt pool on the moving substrate. Superior eatures in terms of good surface finish, low dilution, and refined structure have been found in relation to other comparable fusion processes.
