It is clear that the wider use of surface engineering principles in industry would bring considerable advantages. There is an urgent need to devise a recognized procedure which design engineers and others can use to select coatings and treatments and thereby extend the adoption of these principles. This paper reviews the attempts made to identify such a procedure, and sets out an approach to selection developed at Hull University which utilizes a computer expert system.
