Abstract
The methods available to produce corrosion resistant coatings are considered. Although traditional methods such as dipping, electroplating, and painting are described, emphasis is given to recently developed surface engineering techniques, which are discussed under the categories: spraying, chemical vapour deposition, diffusion techniques, physical vapour deposition, mechanical plating, ion implantation, and electron beam and laser glazing. The advantages and problems relating to these approaches are reviewed with extensive reference to current literature. It is concluded that advances can be made by better use of available knowledge as well as by developments based on the surface engineering philosophy of enhancing the surface properties of materials to increase the corrosion resistance above that of the bulk substrate.
