Abstract
The method of testing the adhesion of a thin, strongly adhering film by scratching it with a loaded diamond stylus is currently the only really satisfactory test available. In this paper the critical load for coating loss and the accompanying so called acoustic emission are discussed critically, together with aspects of metallurgical interest.
