Abstract
In the aerospace sector of manufacturing industry it is essential, in the design of lightweight vehicles, to optimize the static and dynamic properties of even such components as fasteners. This requirement is also increasingly being sought in the automobile industry. Thus, novel designs, optimized production procedures, and specialized materials have to be used. Roll forming is one technique which has been applied successfully for the improvement of resistance to fatigue, and fretting fatigue of metallic fasteners, by virtue of the work hardening and smoothing of the surface which takes place. High and ultrahigh strength materials, in particular nickel, titanium, and ferrous· based alloys, are the principal materials to benefit from this technique.
