Abstract
The quality of pressed and sintered components or thermal sprayed layers is critically dependent on the properties of the constituent powders. Of these properties, flow behaviour and apparent density can be checked relatively easily, whereas the determination of chemical composition and of the particle size distribution is time intensive and costly; therefore the end user is often reliant on information from the supplier. A novel characterisation system combining a slide scanner with automatic image analysis software offers a rapid, low cost route to particle size analysis. Its performance is compared with results obtained from established sieving and laser scattering systems.
