A study of dimensional changes in a compact of Fe–2·0Cu–0·8C—0·75 zinc stearate was carried out by simulating the operating conditions in a practical sintering furnace. The abnormal expansion which occurs in the α-Fe range after delubricating is caused by gas carburising and has a considerable effect on sintering behaviour. The dimensional changes tended to be in the form of shrinkage due to carburisation during heating but in the form of expansion due to carburisation during cooling. PM/0636
