Abstract
Two theories exist concerning the mode of carbon transfer from graphite to iron during the sintering of iron-graphite. One is that carbon is transferred directly through the contacts between the iron and graphite particles, while in the other, the transfer is considered to take place through the formation of a gas phase. Sintering experiments were carried out in hydrogen and vacuum, using compacts of different densities and permeabilities. The results reveal that neither of the existing theories is adequate to explain all the results obtained. The existing theories have not considered the role of graphite in the process of carbon transfer. Further experiments are necessary to understand the mechanism of carbon transfer. PM/0210
