Graphite can be characterized by atomic structure and powder size, shape, and purity. A similar characterization can be applied to hexagonal boron nitride. Three typical graphites are studied to illustrate quality variation and some practical consequences. The properties of hexagonal boron nitride are described to distinguish it from the cubic form.
