Sintered friction materials are complex metal-based composites that represent excellent examples of the principles of powder metallurgy. The production methods employed are compared with those of conventional powder metallurgy and the formulation of the materials is briefly described. Some typical applications, both wet and dry, are given and comparisons with the equivalent organic-based materials are made.
