The paper summarizes the known physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of silicon nitride. These are compared with the properties of several ceramics and other materials in common use, and it is shown how the combination of certain properties in silicon nitride make it an ideal material for six general types of application. For example, it is shown how the combination of thermal shock-resistance and electrical resistivity can be used to develop high-temperature electrical insulators.
