Abstract
In this first part of ‘Recent advances in extraction metallurgy’ two main fields have been reviewed: hydrometallurgy, and electrowinning and refining. Thus, the main ad vances are covered starting from leaching of the concentrated ore and following with winning and refining of a metal by electrochemical means. In the second part the main emphasis will be concentrated on developments in the high-temperature processes (volatilisation and pyrometallurgy) and on the production of super-purity metals. In all these reviews an attempt has been made to cover the developments and trends over the last five to ten years, in order to bring the reader up to date to 1969–70. To accomplish such a task within the scope of a review of this length has of necessity meant that some of the data on the work referred to have had to be very concise, but a sufficient number of more important references has been included for those who may be interested in more detailed accounts.
