Abstract
Research on neutron-irradiation-strengthening in copper single crystals began about 20 years ago. Blewitt and his co-workers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory observed that the radiation of copper single crystals in the core of the Oak Ridge Graphite Reactor for 2 weeks (corresponding to a dose of ∼ 1 × 1018 high-energy neutrons/cm2) greatly, increased the yield stress of these crystals. Values corresponding to ∼ 2 kgf/mm2 (20 MN/m2) were recorded, which represented an increase in yield strength of approximately an order of magnitude over annealed copper single crystals.
