Abstract
Everyone is aware of “the punishment of rust” and figures running into hundreds of millions of pounds1-4 have been quoted for its material effect on the budgets of many countries. These have left aside the losses, plain to the eye but not subject to assessment in pounds, shillings, and pence, which are mainly aesthetic, for certainly rusting and erosion are not pretty sights.
