Abstract
Throughout history a constantly recurring theme has been man's efforts to discover or manufacture the ideal material to fulfil the demands of each new advance in scientific and technological development. Often such material would need to possess a combination of certain of the properties of two or more other substances already in existence. In consequence, there have been, since the earliest times, attempts to produce composites which combined such desirable properties. The development of cermets provides one of the most outstanding examples of this trend. Metals and ceramics together have, of course, been used for centuries for decorative purposes, but perhaps the earliest attempt to produce a unique structural material by such a combination was the process for reinforcing concrete with metal rods developed in the late nineteenth century. Modern cermets are, however, far removed from this isolated invention and their growth really dates from the 1920's, when the first cemented carbides were developed in Germany.
