Abstract
Compared with most metallurgical processes metal spraying is quite new. When it was first invented by Dr. M. U. Schoop of Zürich, some fifty years ago, it was not taken very seriously by metallurgists and its industrial application has far outstripped scientific investigation of the fundamental issues involved. The literature of the process is very extensive, but is often repetitive and speculative. From America come many descriptions of work carried out, but comparatively little is said of the service behaviour over extended periods.
