Abstract
Free neutral atoms of the first transition series of elements, from scandium to nickel in the Periodic Table, have their extranuclear electrons in levels up to 4s, with the exception of the 3d shell, which has vacancies for ten electrons. The number of 3d electrons varies from element to element in passing through the series. When the atoms occur in salts or other non-metallic compounds in the solid state they are usually ionized, sometimes to a varying degree.
