Abstract
The durability of protective and decorative coatings on metals depends largely on adequate surface preparation or “pretreatment” before the coatings are applied. With some coating processes, e.g. electroplating, inadequate preparation is often immediately noticeable, but in the case of painting some time may elapse before failure takes place and then rectification will probably be expensive and difficult. The lapse of time before failure occurs depends to a large extent on the exposure conditions, and where very severe conditions prevail, as for example on the undersides of ships, complete failure is possible within a few months.
