Abstract
In preceding theoretical examinations, the friction welding process of ceramics to metals was investigated by the finite element method and statistical fracture mechanics. The irifluence of residual stresses on the resulting joint strength was of special interest. It was found that, besides material combination, interface geometry does strongly influence the residual stress distributions and therefore has a strong influence on joint strength. In the framework of this examination, these theoretical findings have been experimentally verified. Furthermore, the irifluence of surface preparation and welding parameters have been examined.
