Abstract
Diamond has been deposited on to a 150 μm dia. Pt/Pt–13 wt-%Rh thermocouple wire by hotfilament chemical vapour deposition to form a diamond fibre thermal sensor. The diamond fibres were used to measure temperatures up to ∼ 270°C in air and up to ∼ 1000°C infiowing Ar. The diamond fibres with a Pt core were much less brittle than the corresponding W cored diamond fibres. This is attributed to a thin graphite layer between the core and the diamond which allowed interface decohesion, plastic deformation of the ductile Pt core, and relaxation of extrinsic residual stresses.
