Abstract
Previous tests of a magnesium sensor based on a magnesium fluoride solid electrolyte in molten aluminium-magnesium-silicon alloys indicated that the sensor output was affected by silicon contents of 3.5 wt-% or greater. This effect was previously attributed to the formation of Mg2Si. The subsequent work described in this communication indicates that the silicon affects the sensor output by increasing the loss of magnesium as a result of preferential vaporisation or oxidation, probably by reducing the protection provided by the oxide layer formed on the surface of the alloy.
