Abstract
The microstructure of cast aluminium based alloy AA2618 and its composites containing 10 and 15 vol.-% alumina particles was characterised by means of transmission electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, and microhardness testing. The AA2618 and composite specimens were solution heat treated for 2 h at 530°C, quenched in water, and aged accordingly to produce phases of interest. The Al2 CuMg, Al2 Cu, and X phases were identified as the principal precipitates. It was also found that the reinforcing particles influenced the development and distribution of precipitate phases.
