Abstract
Titanium based alloys offer significant opportunities for weight reduction in aerospace design and more recently it has been considered that particle reinforced titanium based composites will provide the most practical solutions in this field. In the present paper it is identified that it is possible to produce an in situ TiC–(Ti–6Al–4V) composite via a blended elemental reaction powder metallurgical route. The effect of process parameters on the microstructure and on the presence of possible contaminants and undesirable phases is also examined.
