A recent methodfor estimating the cohesion of transition metal carbides with the NaCl type structure is applied to the ordered forms of non-stoichiometric titanium carbide. It is concluded that the ordering occurs because the arrangement of Ti–Ti nearest neighbour links is better able, when regular, to accommodate a redistribution of dd bonding electrons and so reduce electrostatic repulsion energy.
