The work reported is a review of monotectic solidification undertaken to provide the background for an investigation of a possible route for the separation of copper from lead after polymetallic smelting. Solidification in various systems containing a monotectic reaction, and the thermodynamic reasons for such reactions and the occurrence of liquid immiscibility are discussed. The practical developments achieved will be the subject of a future report.
