It is shown that superficial aluminisation largely improves the behaviour of Fe–2·25Cr–1Mo steel at elevated temperatures in O2, SO2 and a typical coal gasification atmosphere. The results are discussed with the aid of the stability diagrams of the system involving Fe, Cr, Mo, O, and S with or without addition of Al.
