The oxidation behaviour of two Fecralloy type steels with compositions Fe–16Cr–4Al–0·4Y and Fe–20Cr–4Al–0·04Y has been studied at 1300 and 1250°C, and the distribution of Y has been investigated. A possible mechanism for the effect of Y in these steels is suggested which accounts for the observed differences in scale morphology and may help explain the improved scale adherence seen in these alloys.
