The microstructure of cement based materials is examined with a view to establishing relationships between microstructure and strength. Porosity of cement is perhaps the most important feature, but the other phases and aggregate are also examined. Present classification systems for both porosity and microstructure of the solid phases cannot be related directly to strength, but several microstructural features that probably control strength have been identified.
