Abstract
In this paper, the more important aspects of the front end of a project involving design, production engineering, welding engineering, and quality assurance are discussed. The interactive nature of these aspects must be taken into consideration while preparing the plan for production. The main objectives are to get the product to the correct quality the first time; to be able to test and demonstrate that it meets acceptance by the customer to programme, at a cost which the customer is prepared to pay; and to meet the needs of the market. There is a need for effective communication throughout these project areas and this is assisted by the paperwork system incorporated within the management business systems.
