The kinetics of ‘Cu2S’ formation on metallic copper in gas mixtures containing H2S have been determined thermogravimetrically at 800°C. Initially, the linear rate law is observed which can be explained in terms of a mixed mechanism involving transport in the gas phase and a slow surface reaction at the gas/sulphid interface. The forward rate constant determined for this interface reaction is k=6·62×10−5 mol cm−2 mol cm−2 s−1 atm−1.
