Abstract
The influence of environmental exposure before and during stress corrosion cracking of an Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy (AA 7475) has been investigated using the shadow optical method of caustics. This technique provides a description of the state of stress near the crack tip region through the expression for the stress intensity factor K for mode I deformation. Measurements of K on double cantilever beam specimens using the shadow optical method of caustics indicate that environmental effects can change the mechanical behaviour of an Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy in the vicinity of the crack tip when under the influence of an applied stress.
