Crack initiation and extension in polymers is generally accompanied by localized viscoelastic and plastic energy dissipative processes occurnng in the vicinity of the crack tip. Two such micromechanisms of major importance are crazing and shear yielding and these are discussed with particular emphasis on the morphology, criteria, and kinetics involved and the influence of the polymer's chemical and physical structure.
