Abstract
The Al corner of the AI-Ti-Si phase diagram is calculated using the Kaufman method and applied in interpreting grain refinement results. Isothermal sections calculated for the temperature interval 587–677°C show that Si shifts the liquidus line of the liquid + TiAl3 region to lower Ti concentrations and also transforms the isothermal peritectic reaction to a monovariant one in which secondary Al crystals are formed over a temperature range. The reported Si enhanced grain refinement effect in AI-Ti alloys is attributed to the extended peritectic reaction field.
