Abstract
Electron energy loss spectrometry using the characteristic signal produced by inner shell excitation has enabled quantitative microanalysis of two types of precipitate extracted from a 9Cr-1 wt.% Mo steel. Previous structural evidence from a needle precipitate with formula M2X has indicated a probable composition close to Cr2N. This is confirmed in the present work which also provides an estimate of the Fe/Cr atomic ratio in the granular M23C6 carbide precipitates. The paper demonstrates the potential of this new technique for detecting light elements in metallurgical problems.
