A detailed experimental study of the development of plastic flow has been made in a non-cavitating superplastic alloy (wrought Pb-Cd eutectic). The behaviour has been analysed in terms of two instabilities, the first corresponding to the development of measurable external necks and the second to the rapid growth of one neck to cause plastic rupture.
