Replicas have been examined both from the fracture surfaces and from polished sections of creep specimens of pure iron and copper, to determine the shape of grain-boundary cavities. From the observations a mechanism is proposed whereby combined grain-boundary sliding and grain deformation gives rise to cavity growth.
