Earlier work on the low-strain fatigue of polycrystalline aluminium has shown that fatigue cracks are initiated in grains exhibiting a range of deformation features other than the well-known characteristic fatigue bands. A fine-beam Laue X-ray-diffraction technique has now been used to relate the features observed to the orientations of the grains with respect to the stress axis and the specimen surface. The results are described and discussed in terms of work-hardening behaviour.
